The ‘understanding our community’ event was organised by Bomaderry High School’s careers adviser, Holly Pastor, to educate students about the changing nature of employment in the Shoalhaven.
Students heard from guest speakers Lynne Allen from Shoalhaven Historical Society, Marianne Jones from Shoalhaven City Council, Federal Member for Gilmore Ann Sudmalis and Royal Australian Navy personnel Leading Seaman Jan Gilmour and Petty Officer Olivia Usback.
Presenters spoke about a range of issues including changes to industry in the Shoalhaven, the current makeup of the local workforce, the importance of the Royal Australian Navy to the area and predictions for future employment trends.
Giving students the opportunity to speak to community members in this way helps connect the classroom to a world outside the school gate where students can apply the knowledge and skills they have developed throughout their education.
Part two of the workshop saw students challenge themselves and create their own proposal to enhance employment opportunities in Shoalhaven.
A number of excellent projects were developed including a plan to connect local high schools and the business community via a mentoring program.
The ‘understanding our community’ event is part of a series of innovative careers education workshops introduced by Bomaderry High School to engage students in career planning and develop a deeper understanding of the community that they live in.
