Held at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre, the 15-year-old claimed three gold medals and one bronze medal – while breaking four Australian records.
Symonds, a T11 athlete, first took to the track on Wednesday, March 14 in the 200m heat, where she ran a time of 33.04 – a new Australian record.
The Nowra High student then backed it up later that day to win gold in the final, running a slightly slower time of 33:09.
The after a rest day on Thursday, the Victory Runners athlete took on the 400m race on Friday.
The 400m event was a straight final, where Symonds claimed her second gold of the meet, in a time of 1.17:33 – again a new Australia record.
She then had the 100m race on the Saturday, where she ran a 15:88 in the heat, before breaking the Australian record with a time of 15:80 in the final.
“The performance I’m most proud of is the 100m, because I beat my own personal best while also setting a new Australian record,” Symonds said.
“In my heat, I just missed out on the Australian record, so my mum [Sharon] told me to stick my head out a little further in the next race.
“It worked and I ran a little bit quicker, to break the record.”
Symonds was in pretty illustrious company in this under 20s race, with Paralympic medallist and world record holder Isis Holt, a T35 athlete, claiming gold.
The final of Symonds’ nationals assault was the 800m, which she won in a time of 3.12:05 – another Australian record time.
“Going into the championships, I didn’t expect to medal at all – maybe in the 800m but that’s it,” Symonds said.
“Looking back now, I’m so proud of what I achieved, especially considering I was running against athletes far older than me.
“On top of that, it was very hot and my ankles were sore from so much running.
“This is easily the greatest achievement of my career.”
After starring on the national stage, Symonds has now set her sights on even bigger competitions.
“I’ve now got my eye on the Oceania Melanesian Regional Championships, which will be held in Vanuatu from May 9-11,” she said.
“With my first place results, I’ve qualified for the meet but it all depends if they are going to run para-events.
“We will find out soon exactly what events they are going to hold at the Oceania Championships.”
