Over the past year, there were less violent crimes committed in the Shoalhaven than the previous year according to newly-released figures from the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research.
The number of reported domestic violence incidences reduced from 393 in 2016 to 339 in 2017.
Likewise, there was a drop in non-domestic violence incidences from 438 to 391.
There was a significant drop in apprehended violence order breaches, from 286 to 215.
Harassment, threatening behaviour and private nuisance dropped from 514 to 438.
There were no murders or attempted murders in 2016 or 2017.
There was little change in the frequency of sexual assault and indecent assault cases.
However, the region’s drug scourge has worsened.
There were 424 people charged with possession and/or use of cannabis, up from 267. There were 214 people charged with possession and/or use of ice, up from 178 in 2016 – an increase of more than 40 per cent over the past five years. Other drug possession offences were up from 66 cases to 90.
“High-visibility and mobile policing operations targeting anti-social behaviour, alcohol-related violence, and drug possession and supply are having a significant impact,” NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller said.
