The Cancer Council event has raised almost $2.7 million to date and the relay, which starts Saturday March 24 at the Nowra Showground, is set to be an extremely important one for the local community.
This year’s event ambassadors, father and daughter duo Chalkie and Emily White, are talented musicians with a passion for supporting the relay, due to their own personal battles with cancer.
Chalkie is a well-known entertainer who, in December 2016, was diagnosed with two forms of lymphoma and has fought hard to overcome the disease.
“I find it hard to believe that there is not any one in the world who has not been touched by cancer,” he said.
“Relay for Life is a really inspiring event and an amazing thing to witness.”
Along with the ambassadors’ performance, the cast of Mary Poppins from The Albatross Musical Theatre Company will perform.
The weekend will also be filled with activities for children, including a visit from the Shoalhaven Zoo, face painting and a jumping castle.
Cancer Council Community Engagement Manager, Stephanie Lake, said she was excited to be able to engage the community in a unique event like this over a 24-hour period.
“We have had amazing support in the past and we are certain this year’s relay will be no exception,” Ms Lake said.
Every year in NSW alone, more than 48 000 new cases of cancer are expected to be diagnosed.
Every donation helps, as little as just five dollars can help give a newly diagnosed cancer patient important support and information resources to help them through their cancer journey.
Locally, the money raised will support programs that are vital to those affected by cancer in the Shoalhaven region.
The relay is a great chance to celebrate survivorship, remember loved ones lost and to fight back against cancer.
You can register at www.relayforlife.org.au/nowra or on the day of the event.
