RFS confirmed 69 homes and businesses were lost and more than 200 people evacuated from Tathra during the bushfires on Sunday.

Mrs Hancock has started a fundraiser and urges people to show their support for the small town’s families to help them get back on their feet

Fortunately there were no lives lost, however, many families “lost everything with the fire claiming many of their homes and businesses,” she said.

Mrs Hancock asked the local community to donate what they’re able to.

“Many of us here in the Shoalhaven understand the threat of bushfires and the devastation they can cause and our hearts go out to the residents of Tathra,” Mrs Hancock said.

“It was only a few months ago that we faced a similar threat with the fires outside Nowra and at Jervis Bay and we were lucky to not to have experienced the same level of destruction.

“But unfortunately the town of Tathra has and now is the time to get behind them and do what we can to help.” 

All money raised will be given to Bega Red Cross and used to buy essential items and goods, as well as assist in the recovery process to rebuild the town and people’s lives, she said.

Mrs Hancock also praised emergency service personnel and volunteers including the Rural Fire Service who have been and still are working around the clock to keep the fire under control and people and properties safe.

“Premier Gladys Berejiklian has also flown to Bega to receive an update on the situation and see what can be down to help firefighters and the Tathra community,” she said.
