At about 2am, emergency services were called to a fire at Shoalhaven Excavations on Nowra Hill Road.
Fire crews used three Fire and Rescue NSW trucks, four Rural Fire Service trucks and two Hazmat trucks to extinguish the blaze, which engulfed the workshop and adjoining building.
“Firefighters were faced with very hazardous conditions and did a great job,” Fire and Rescue NSW Nowra captain John Dun said.
“There were quite a few flammable gas containers in the workshop, and one that had gone off.
“The aim was to keep the fire from the fuel storage area, we were able to achieve that.”
After four hour’s work, the fire was extinguished, but it destroyed a shed and machinery.
“The damage out there was quite severe,” Mr Dun said.
A crime scene was established and inquiries into the incident, including whether it is suspicious, are continuing.
