Laura is the face of a national campaign to encourage people to eat Australian-made cheese.
“Everyone knows that buying local is a great way to support farmers, but Aussies can always do more. Just add more Australian cheese to your diet,” said Laura.
“The cheese produced from high-quality Australian milk is some of the best in the world. It’s not only delicious, it’s great for you. Buying and enjoying more local cheese supports more than just your local cheesemonger, it’s also a great way to support local producers and dairy farmers like us.
“That’s why I jumped at the opportunity to join like-minded female farmers from all over the country to create this video and raise awareness of this easy way to help out.”
New research commissioned by Dairy Australia found that nine out of 10 Australian women prefer to buy Australian-made products.
The research showed the top reason for buying local is to support Australian jobs (78 per cent), with 74 per cent of Australian women expressly purchasing to support their country’s farmers.
While women are some of the strongest champions for Australian farmers, nine out of 10 are not consuming their recommended serves from the dairy food group, as per the Australian Dietary Guidelines.
According to Dairy Australia Dietitian Glenys Zucco, there are many health benefits to eating cheese and instead of restricting their intake, most Australian women should be looking to increase their daily consumption of cheese.
“Accumulated research shows that there is a wealth of health benefits linked with the consumption of cheese, which is a valuable source of naturally occurring essential nutrients,” she said.
“It takes more than 10 litres of milk to produce just one kilogram of cheese, which means that cheese is a super concentrated source of nutrients – including calcium for strong bones and protein for hunger busting and healthy muscles.
“The volume of milk required for cheese production also means that adding more cheese to your diet really does have a beneficial impact on our Australian dairy industry.”
