Jake Gerald Platt, 23, of no fixed address pleaded guilty to using an offensive weapon to commit an indictable offence, assaulting police and destroying property.

Court papers said police were called to Torridon Street in Nowra by NSW Ambulance personnel at 8pm on January 27 about a male who had possibly overdosed on methylamphetamine or ice.

Police spoke to the man whose “eyes were wide open but had pinpoint pupils”.

The man refused paramedics’ treatment and left the property.

About two and half hours later, two officers patrolling the nearby Mackay Street noticed a man walk towards their vehicle near the intersection with Torridon Street with a 60cm metal pipe.

Court papers said Platt walked up to the car and hit the driver’s side window three times with the pipe.

The court was told the officer, fearing the window would shatter, drew his firearm.

Platt stepped away from the vehicle, allowing the officer to open the door and get out.

The officer called for him to put the metal pipe down, but police statements say Platt actually lifted the pipe to waist height.

An officer in the passenger side of the vehicle managed to get out and direct capiscum spray over the vehicle towards Platt, who was still holding the metal pipe within reach of the other officer.

Platt was again ordered to put the pipe down before he was hit by a burst of capsicum spray.

Court papers said when he was arrested he was rambling incoherently and appeared to be more affected by drugs.

In Nowra Local Court on Monday (March 12) Magistrate Michael Barko sentenced Platt to 12 months’ jail with a non-parole period of six months. He will be eligible for parole from July 26.

It’s not the first time Platt has been jailed for assaulting an emergency services member.

In March last year he pleaded guilty to hitting a paramedic in the head while being treated at the Batemans Bay police station.

Platt was in the custody of Corrective Services on January 23 last year when he appeared to have some sort of medical episode.

Paramedics attended the police station to treat him, with Platt later punching the paramedic who was monitoring him.

On that occasion Magistrate Gabriel Fleming sentenced him to nine months’ jail, with a non-parole period of three months.
