A small community group will spend two weeks knitting to cover railings, posts, and with Shoalhaven Council’s permission, trees, attracting people to a community not for profit art gallery, The Studio.
The Studio was awash with colourful knitted items and laughter on Thursday morning, at a group knitting session.
For Callala artist Jennifer Corkish, this was an opportunity to bring people together, and get to know some local people.
“The response has been amazing,” Jennifer said.
“We’re having a laugh, people are meeting each other, there’s a real sense of community.
“After going to the Callala Club I realised that there were very many people who needed more community contact so this project came to mind.
“The Studio offered me a solo exhibition in their gallery which has excited me immensely.
“My greatest fear was that row of shops were sort of out of the way from IGA, the post office and chemist and would not be noticed.
“The thought of yarn bombing the front of The Studio came to mind.
“Knowing that I couldn’t do it on my own I decided to try and make it a community project, enabling anyone who wanted to become involved in any way they could.”
The Callala friendship group and craft club have pitched in to help.
People have donated yarn to the cause.
All are welcome to take part.
There are women involved who are willing to give lessons to beginners.
The exhibition opens on April 21.
