The one day ride from Nowra to Batemans Bay raises awareness of depression and suicide prevention and will again support headspace Nowra.

With last year’s ride curtailed due to the weather and concerns over safety, local organiser Paul Gaffney is looking to make 2018 even bigger and better.

“It was disappointing to have to cancel due to the weather last year,” he said.

“But the interest is still there and I’d love to see 200 plus bikes take part this year.”

Two years ago the ride attracted 130 riders.

This year there will be 41 rides around Australia on the same day, including an extra seven in Victoria.

“We should hit over 7000 bikes around Australia taking part on the same day,” Mr Gaffney said.

This year’s event is taking on even more significance for the man affectionately known as “Gaff”.

After being attacked in Wollongong while working as a bus driver last September, he has battled with his own demons.

“While I suffered only minor injuries it certainly shook me up,” he said “and I’ve battled a series of depressions.

“It’s been hard, as anyone who has suffered depression knows.

“So this year is especially special for me.”

Check in for the South Coast ride is at the Shoalhaven City Council administration car park in Nowra from 7.30am.

Lions Nowra will have breakfast and coffee available.

The ride will leave at 9am and is expected to arrive at the Marina at Batemans Bay at between 11 and 11.30am.

Lions Batemans Bay will be providing food at the location with the South Coast ride also meeting up with riders from Canberra.
