To comply with NSW laws all dogs and cats must be microchipped by 12 weeks or before being sold or given away.
There will be a nominal fee for the microchipping of litters of puppies or kittens. RSPCA Nowra will do the microchipping.
If you’re a pension or health care card holder (AWL) will issue vouchers which can be taken to participating vets to get a discount on the desexing fee leaving a fee of $50 per cat and $100 per-dog. The animal must be chipped, which can be done on the day.
The day will be held at Interchange Building, 37 Holloway Road, Nowra East. Cats from 10am till 11.30am and dogs from 12pm to 1.30pm. Contact 0429 429 885.
Meanwhile, the Shoalhaven Animal Welfare homeless program is still going.
The program came about after two Shoalhaven Animal Welfare members stopped to talk with a homeless man while on their daily dog walk.
It soon became apparent that he was struggling to provide for his much loved dog and so, after assisting him, the idea for a program to help other pets of the homeless was born.
The Shoalhaven branch reached out to other organisations in the area who were all eager to take part, and so in partnership with Shoalhaven Homeless Hub, Salt Ministries, RSPCA Nowra Volunteer Branch, North Nowra Veterinary Hospital and Berry Vet Clinic the Shoalhaven’s new Pets of the Homeless Program was officially launched last year.
Many homeless people have pets but lack the finances for their care.
Their animals offer them protection as well as companionship and, as studies have shown, animals can be very important for mental wellbeing.
The new initiative aims to assist the local homeless and their pets by providing ongoing treatments such as flea and tick control, worming and annual immunisations as well as donations of food, collars and leads and dog jackets for the colder nights.
Also as part of the program, free vet days are being held at the Shoalhaven Homeless Hub in Junction Street, Nowra on the last Thursday of each month, to give them a chance to bring their animals along to receive free expert medical advice and treatment for any health issues their animal may have and to have microchipping done.
Microchipping is supplied free of charge and the cost for compulsory council animal registration fees are covered for desexed animals by the Nowra RSPCA.
Desexing and its many benefits is also discussed and provided free to all pets of the homeless through Shoalhaven Animal Welfare League, the Berry Vet Clinic and North Nowra Veterinary Hospital.
Those wishing to attend the vet clinics must be registered with the Shoalhaven Homeless Hub. The support of the local community is always welcome.
Donations of dried dog food or financial donations can be made by contacting the Shoalhaven Animal Welfare League on 0429 429 885
