The RSPCA Shoalhaven Shelter started out with 45 animals on Friday, February 23.

By the end of the weekend, there was just one dog, one cat and a rabbit still to find their forever homes. 

Long-term dogs who had been there for around five months found new homes and manager Sharon Johnson said it was great to the pets go to well-suited families. 

“Sometimes we get a bit nervous when prices are that low but there was no-one there we thought ‘do you really want a pet’?” she said. 

“Every animal was well-matched and we even had people who had a look and then left which is great because obviously what they were after wasn’t there and they weren’t just adopting a pet regardless.” 

Sharon said all adoptions still had to follow regular protocol, such as prospective families bringing in their existing pet to see if the two would get along. 

All animals were desexed, microchipped, vaccinated, vet checked and processed by behavior experts. 

While it’s a happy story for most of the Shoalhaven pets, there’s still one cat who would love a new home. 

Puss has been at the shelter since May 2017. While she was adopted in December, she was returned in January as she proved to be a little too playful for the family’s own cat. 

Sharon described Puss as “a sweet but not overly independent girl, not overly affectionate and would suit someone just looking to have a presence in the house.”

Across the state 92 per cent of animals available found their forever home, with the adoption sale breaking previous records. 

RSPCA NSW rehomed 775 animals across New South Wales, and 2,792 across the country.

Last year saw 583, or 81 per cent of RSPCA NSW rescue animals rehomed during Clear the Shelter, while 2017 saw a whopping 90 per cent of available animals find their forever homes.
