Applications are now open for this year’s Kokoda Youth Leadership Challenge.

The Nowra RSL Sub-Branch stages Kane’s Kokoda Challenge, a foundation established in memory of the late Chief Petty Officer Kane Vandenberg who was killed in 2013.

This foundation aims to give young people of the Shoalhaven an opportunity to walk the Kokoda Track but more importantly allowing these individuals to tackle challenges, be part of a team and encourage leadership skills.

Trekkers must be aged between 17 and 25 as of September 29 this year to be eligible.

This year’s trek leaves on Saturday, September 29, returning on Wednesday, October 10.

They must also be able to attend workshop in Sydney on May 12.

The Nowra Sub-Branch pays for all trek costs, while the trekker is expected to cover their own clothing, snacks, spending money, medical, passport costs.

The trekker must be prepared to put in the effort into training themselves for the trek.

The Nowra RSL has sponsored three participants in the challenge, PO Vandenberg’s son Lachlan in 2015,  Andrew Taylor in 2016 and Bronte Heslehurst last year.

Nowra Anglican College student, Bronte returned from the trek with a newfound perspective on life, prepared to tackle whatever challenges life throws at her.

“This was a huge challenge,” she said “but one I was proud to be able to rise too.

“I’ve learnt so many things from the adventure, especially about myself.

“It was an amazing experience - extremely challenging.”

She said the experience also gave her a new perspective on what Australian Diggers faced during the New Guinea campaign.

“It gave me the chance to fully appreciate what they did. They never gave up, their dedication to keep fighting was incredible,” she said.
