The Callala Beach resident wrote a 390-page book, The Crimean War: Then and Now and had it published in the UK late last year.

Before moving to Callala in 2014, the former UK resident visited the Crimea three times to walk the battlefields and take photographs. 

The Crimean War took place between 1854 and 1856. A notable event was the famous ‘Charge of the Light Brigade’ at the Battle of Balaklava.

After moving with his wife to be closer to their daughter in Sydney, Dr Jones began to work on the book, pulling together many photographs, both recent and historical. 

“The book features many images either photographed or painted, made at the time of the Crimean War and contrasts them with my images of today taken in the ‘very footsteps’ of the original artists,” Dr Jones’ said.

“These images are put into context by an account of the war from the invasion of the Crimea in 1854 to the departure of the last British troops in 1856.”

Born in Birmingham in the UK, Dr Jones was raised in nearby Dudley before attending the universities of Hull, Exeter and Keele to study botany and then plant diseases. 

His professional career has been as a plant pathologist specialising in the problems of banana.
