Geoffrey David Kornfeld, 59, of Yarrawarra, near Engadine was given a 18-month suspended jail sentence by Magistrate Gabriel Fleming in Nowra Local Court on Tuesday and disqualified from driving for 18 months.
Kornfeld pleaded guilty to negligent driving occasioning death and negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm.
Kornfeld was driving a Kia Sonata that collided with a Toyota Cressida being driven by local teenager Dimitri Kalderimis on the Princes Highway at Wandandian on December 3, 2016.
Kalderimis, aged 17, was airlifted to a Sydney hospital in a critical condition but died as a result of the accident.
Agreed facts presented to the court stated Kornfeld was driving south on the Princes Highway at Wandandian when his vehicle crossed the double unbroken centreline and collided with Kalderimis, who was travelling north.
Kornfeld and the teenager were both trapped in their vehicles and had to be released by NSW Ambulance Paramedics and NSW Fire and Rescue personnel.
Kornfeld was also airlifted to a Sydney hospital in a critical condition, while his wife, Lorraine, who was a front seat passenger in the vehicle suffered abdominal injuries and was transported to hospital.
Court papers said there was no evidence of speed, drug use or mechanical malfunction that caused the accident.
A female witness stated Kornfeld's car “veered into the opposite lane”.
