The Sixers won the toss and for the second consecutive home game, decided to put the opposition to bat first.
The Heat, who were already void of the services of Chris Lynn, were dealt a severe blow even before the start of the game with their second-highest scorer in BBL|07, Joe Burns, and their second-most prolific bowler of BBL|07, Brendan Doggett, both missing through injury.
The Heat innings never really got going though, with the captain Brendon McCullum first to fall to Botha, courtesy of a spectacular diving Carlos Brathwaite effort in the second over.
Further strikes from Lyon and Dwarshius made Heat reel at 3/11.
Alex Ross and Jimmy Peirson tried to revive the innings for the Heat but any hopes of the visitors reaching a competitive score came crashing when Sean Abbott picked up both Ross and Peirson in successive overs to very similar dismissals getting caught behind to Nevill.
It was an impressive spell of seam bowling by Abbott who finished his outing with figures of 4/11, his second best T20 career figures.
Such were the dire straits of the Heat’s innings, their run-rate never lifted above six-an-over after midway through the second over of the innings.
Abbott’s terrific effort was complemented by other Sixers bowlers as Lyon and Brathwaite took two wickets apiece.
Brathwaite, who had an eventful evening, capped his efforts with another impressive catch, before grabbing the final wicket of the Heat’s innings to restrict them to the third lowest total by any team in BBL history.
The Sixers made light work of the Heat’s modest total with Daniel Hughes continuing his good touch from his previous innings at the SCG against city rivals Sydney Thunder.
The left hander played some glorious shots to enthrall the local crowd in his innings of 37 (off 28 balls).
The Heat had a dismal day in the field too with a rare misfield from the ever reliable captain McCullum, who needed a shirt change following the mistake, while Jason Floros, playing in his first game of BBL|07, misjudged a high catch off Maddinson’s batting.
Maddinson applied the finishing touches with a cameo 17 (off eight balls) consisting of two hits over the fence.
The loss leaves the Heat's final aspirations in tatters as their progress now very much depends on other results running in their favour.
Meanwhile, the Sixers continued their impressive streak in the latter stages of the competition and leapfrogged Thunder to climb up to sixth place on the ladder.
