Torquay Boardriders Club, Elouera Boardriders Club, North Narrabeen Boardriders Club, Culburra Beach Boardriders Club, North Shelly Beach Boardriders and Bondi Boardriders will all contest the prestigious event that includes Australia’s best boardriders clubs.
Culburra Beach Boardriders Club will potentially field a team consisting of three members of the Wright family with 2017 World Surf League (WSL) Women’s World Champion Tyler to join brothers Owen and Mikey in what will be a hard team to beat – along with other WSL Qualifying Series athletes Ty Watson, Jordin Watson and Louis Gillick.
Fellow South Coast club, Ulladulla Boardriders, who posses athletes such as Sophia Fulton and Aidan Lewand-Parsons, will also compete at the finals.
Torquay Boardriders Club will bring experienced former WSL men’s world tour athlete Troy Brooks to Newcastle, adding experience to a talented team including the likes of Australian junior champions India Robinson and Xavier Huxtable.
Other WSL stars Matt Wilkinson (Avoca), Adrian Buchan (Avoca), and Connor O’Leary (Elouera) are just a few of the many big names to bolster an already star-studded field of surfers.
The 24th club to gain entry into the national final will be the winner of the nudie trials on Saturday, February 17 – the final qualifying opportunity for clubs in the Newcastle region for the last wildcard position.
“We are really excited to announce the selected wildcard clubs who will meet the qualifying clubs at the national final to battle it out for over $100,000 in prize money and also the ultimate prize of the nudie Australian Boardriders Battle Championship trophy,” Surfing Australia CEO Andrew Stark said.
“This is the official Australian Club Championships and we are thrilled with the calibre of clubs that round out the 24-strong field.
“The nudie Australian Boardriders Battle Series is a critical Surfing Australia sport development program that builds the capacity and profile of our national boardriders clubs.
“We are extremely proud of the national club program and look forward to crowning a champion in Newcastle in February.”
