BAY and Basin Cricket Club’s Nathan Tyrrell will have the honour of pulling on the green and gold later this year, after recently being named in the Australian Last Man Stands squad.

The Last Man Stands format, founded in 2005, involves eight players on each side, in a Twenty20 style match, that only runs for two hours.
The 28-year-old St Georges Basin all-rounder, who has scored 269 runs and taken 24 wickets for the Dolphins this season, will travel to Chester, England in August to take on the world’s best.
“I was selected in the Australian squad due to my batting ranking, which has me ranked as the number one batsmen in the world,” Tyrrell said.
“My consistency has seen me hold that mantle for the past 18 months.”
Tyrrell, who plays for the Rock Lobsters club, currently sits on 61.2035 points, is just ahead of Canberra’s Rob Regent (60.1362) and Toowoomba’s Michael Hawkins (59.5786) in the world batting rankings.
“This is the first time I have represented Australia in this format,” Tyrrell said.
“I have previously had the honour of being selected in the Australian under 21 all-stars indoor side back in 2010 but this is much different.
“This occasion is very special to me and I hope to play the best that I can.”
Notable changes from the normal T20 format include;
- overs consist of five balls rather than six, however only the first wide or no ball of an over is re-bowled, with any further extras after that counted as three runs to the opposition, for a firm cap of six-ball overs.
- batsmen have to retire once they hit 50, however can return to the crease if the remaining batsmen are all dismissed, and teams bat until seven wickets have been lost. At that point the last man standing (hence the name) bats on by himself, however can only run twos, or hit boundaries.
“The mindset changes a lot because of the format of Last Man Stands, where generally 200 runs is a par score,” Tyrrell said.
Tyrrell, who averages 82.58 and has a strike rate of 225.74 in the Last Man Stands format, have been pooled with teams from Bangladesh, Singapore, United States, South Africa and Sri Lanka, for their world series competition.
Following his trip to the United Kingdom, Tyrrell’s and his Wollonong based team Rock Lobsters club will compete in the Last Man Stands club world championships in Sydney in 2019 – after they won the Australian title in Gold Coast in November.
