“The container ship MSC Luisa was briefly anchored in the middle of Jervis Bay, outside the Marine Park Sanctuary Zones, in order to seek refuge from bad weather and protect the ship and its crew,” said a spokesperson for MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company.
“The Master in charge was in regular contact with all the relevant authorities before entering the bay and followed instructions accordingly.
“The vessel has subsequently moved on without any report of damage to the marine environment.”
Heavy seas and strong southerly winds lashed the South Coast on Monday and Tuesday.
NSW Maritime Executive Director Angus Mitchell said the MSC Luisa was ordered back out to sea by Maritime officers after illegally anchoring in Jervis Bay on Monday.
“The vessel was told to leave the area of the marine park immediately after it was discovered there without a permit,” Mr Mitchell said.
On Wednesday morning the Maritime Traffic app placed the MSC Luisa well out to sea south-east of Bemm River in Victoria.
