The 28-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to two counts of common assault and resisting arrest and was refused bail in November.
The man’s sentence was handed down at Nowra Local Court on Monday.
Court papers said the man was captured on CCTV assaulting the child twice on November 20 at a Bomaderry home.
The man was captured punching the youngster with a closed fist on a number of occasions, with the assaults taking place around 6.20am and 9am. During one of the assaults he also threw an item at the child, striking him in the chest.
On seeing the footage the child’s mother reported the matters to police.
The man was arrested around 10pm on November 20 while driving his car at Nowra East.
The man resisted officers during his arrest and had to be forcibly removed from the vehicle.
Court papers revealed the man had 20 prior charges and was on bail for stealing offences.
Police described the man’s actions as “appalling”, saying he could provide no explanation for his actions other than he “can’t remember”.
Police said the victim was a “defenceless three-year-old boy, who was at the mercy of a much larger and stronger person”.
