The crash claimed the life of 36-year-old Tamara Mobarrez and left her husband, Hamid Mobarrez, 36, and five-year-old son Eli with severe injuries in Sydney hospitals.
Mr Mobarrez, an Olympian for Iran and the head swimming coach at an all-girls private school in eastern Sydney, was driving with his family in a white Subaru on Matron Porter Drive about 3.50pm on Thursday when a silver Volvo, driven by a 39-year-old Narrawallee man, crossed onto the wrong side of the road, colliding with the family’s vehicle.
Mrs Mobarrez was unable to be revived and died at the scene, while Mr Mobarrez was trapped in the car, suffering multiple fractures and suspected spinal injuries.
Mr Mobarrez was on Monday in a stable condition, while Eli remained in intensive care with head and facial injuries.
By Monday afternoon a GoFundMe page, set up by Swimming NSW to help cover the cost of Mr Mobarrez and Eli’s recovery, had raised $131,000.
“Hamid has trained so many of our children to be strong, both in the water and out,” the organisation’s fundraising appeal said.
“Let's all pull together and do what we can to help.”
In a statement, the organisation said the crash occurred “near Mollymook where Hamid was conducting a camp for his swimmers”.
"Our love and deepest sympathy are with Hamid and Eli at this time and we offer our sincere condolences with the loss of their beautiful wife and mother," the organisation said.
At the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, Mr Mobarrez represented Iran in the men's 100-metre freestyle. In 2007, he held Iran's record for 100-metre butterfly.
The Volvo driver, who wasn’t seriously injured in the crash, has been charged with dangerous driving occasioning death, two counts of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, negligent driving occasioning death and negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm.
The man was given bail to appear at Sutherland Local Court on February 20.
