After the success of the inaugural event in 2017, this year’s picnic is expected to once again draw the crowds and raise funds for a cause.
One Voice Shoalhaven was formed by Meroo Meadow woman, Sheelagh Cameron. The group honours Mrs Cameron’s son, Gavin Cameron, who passed away from melanoma four years ago.
“After Gavin died I set up a foundation for melanoma research, so we thought we would make it for the Gavin Cameron Foundation,” Mrs Cameron said.
“We want to make an awareness of melanoma. No one is exempt from cancer, no one will escape that. Cancer Council says by 2020 1 in 3 people will be affected by cancer, that’s high statistics.”
This year’s Picnic in the Park will again raise money for melanoma research.
Last year’s event raised $1500 and Mrs Cameron and fellow event organiser Sue Hammond-Warne are hoping to crack the $5000 mark in 2018.
The event will be held on Sunday, March 11 at Nowra Showground from 11am to 4pm.
With a theme of ‘Embracing our multiculturalism’ there will be no shortage of delicious food vendors.
Argentian and Irish dancers are set to impress, along with Bomaderry dancers Your Talent Team.
Nowra Anglican College and Nowra Public School students, Sing Australia and the Shoalhaven Community Choir will also entertain the crowds.
There will also be plenty of fun on offer for the little ones, including face painting.
Talent performers including Kim de Ville, Cameron Fernie, Nukem, Katie Halliday, tenor Christopher Lincoln Bogg, Joe Visser, Berry Silver Band, Olivia Corrish and Sarah Dicker who performed in The Little Mermaid at Albatross will also light up the showground. Peter Bishop will emcee the event.
Regardless of your singing prowess, everyone is invited to join in on Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’ and ‘I am Australian’ to celebrate the occasion.
Picnic in the Park is a cigarette and alcohol free event.
Entry is by gold coin donation.
