One word describes the weather this week, HOT. On Wednesday, the hot weather and fast green resulted in some close games with bowlers finishing the four games of Social Pairs and one of Triples. Saturday was given over to the Men’s Bowling Club 2017 Presentation Day.
Wednesday 13th December unlucky for some although the fast green was a pleasure to play on.
Rink 2 held the first game of Pairs. This was as close as a game can be. John O’Dell and Alessandro Lattanzio won on an end count of 11 to 10 after being tied at 19 shots all.
Rink 3 Bert Watson and John Black were just too skilled on the day, winning by 29 to 15 shots.
Rink 4 witnessed Gary Thurston and Graham Mills playing magnificent bowls to devastate their opposition by 20 shots to 12.
Rink 5 This was the match of the week. Both teams had a solid start by winning an end each. Gary Way and Bert Madge then found their length and moved themselves into the lead with a fabulous four to be 8 to 2 by the 5 end. Allan Furniss and Roy Cartledge played some spectacular bowls to be 6/8 on the 8th end but Gary and Bert would not be denied. A fantastic three had them surging ahead only to see Allan and Roy respond with a fabulous 4 to move within a shot of the lead. Gary and Bert again gained the upper hand and extended their lead to 16 shots to 13 by the 16th end. Allan and Roy dug deeply and clawed their way back, one shot at a time, to level the score on the penultimate end at 17 all. Who would hold their concentration best on the last end? Gary Way and Bert Madge played an outstanding bowls to win the end and the game by one shot, 18/17. What a great game!
Rink 6 In one of the best display of bowls I’ve seen, Matthew Rosina and Ian Abberley played a flawless game to annihilate their opposition by 37 shots to 3.
Rink 7 In the only game of Triples, Steve Hollington (welcome back), David Solomon and John Edwards played at their very best and trounced their opponents by 15 to 8 shots.

Berry Men
Wednesday 13th saw Tom Froggatt return to the winning list when he led Geoff Lidbetter to a narrow victory over the strong pairing of Russell Tulloch and David Badger.
Ken Stephens played swinging lead and saw Barry Dunn and David Lambert to a win over Ken Crocker and Peter Webb who had led until end 10 but from that stage the consistent play of Ken, Barry and David gave them the match, Laurie Watson led for Mark Power but despite scoring two ends of four counters mid match they could not account for the consistent scoring of Lindsay McNamara and Terry Hayes.
The triples match of the afternoon was won by Peter Adriancz, George Waddell and Phil Chittick from the strong combination of Harry Harrop, Peter Haddon and Derek Raymond.
The heat experienced on Saturday 16th saw numbers playing and ends played reduced. Despite a good lead early Lindsay McNamara and Geoff Lidbetter succumbed to the heat and consistent scoring of Russell Tulloch and Phil Chittick. In the other match despite scoring five counters on an early end David Lambert and Terry Hayes could not account for the consistent scoring of the winners Derek Raymond and Adam Rigney.

Lake Conjola Men
Presentation Night. Last weekend saw us celebrate a wonderful year at Conjola. Whether it was winning or losing championships, social games or just making friends at charity days, Conjola Men’s Bowling Club gave us something to smile about. These events don’t just happen without the hard work of volunteers.Thank you to the quiet achievers who make our club the community hub we always enjoy.
We started with a flag raising ceremony for our winning pennant 2 team and presentation to club winners of (prizes) badges and shirts. There was also a toast to absent friends. The Minor singles winner was deservedly Tony Rolls who has been unlucky in this event for a long while. The Minor Pairs winners were Mick Charters / Dean Straughan. Consistency winner was Col Baker. Major Minor Pairs winners were Dean Straughan /Garry Kelly. Frank Stevens Triples winners were Geoff Watson /John Spinks/Ray Murrell. Handicap Pairs winners were Allan Mcacdougall /Jeff Tierney. Triples winners Mick Charters/Nick King/Scott Mathieson. Fours winners Geoff Watson/Ian Spiers/Ian Smith/Geoff Weeks. Major Pairs winners Mick Charters/Ian Smith. The Major Singles winner is the blue ribbon event and Scott Mathieson, who also represented NSW Country, was again Champion.
M.C on the night was Ian Spiers our tireless bowls secretary who is clearly getting better and better with the microphone. We also acknowledged Glen Radacliff by giving him our Encouragement Award.
The Club Person off the Year was awarded to a very humble Steve Rimington.
Culburra Women
Our bowling year has come to an end, and what a successful year it has been – both for our members and our club. Along with the men, we finished our year off with our annual Christmas party and concert. With the sun shining and everyone in good spirits a fun game of bowls was played after which we all enjoyed lunch together. Our very talented ladies performed a wonderful concert which had everyone thoroughly entertained. President Jenny and President Jim cut the Christmas cake – which was made and decorated by our very own Joan Barnwell - thank you Joan for all the beautiful cakes you have made for us throughout the year for our many celebrations.
A big thank you to all our members who have supported our club and helped out over the past year – it has been a year to remember.
We wish all our members and their families a safe and happy Christmas and look forward to seeing everyone in the new year.
