A group of teenage girls from Nowra and surrounding areas joined local police as part of the first all-girls Fishing for the Future Program.
They learnt about licenses, how many fish, lobsters and abalone they can legally take, and size restrictions.
They were also taught about catch and release, a crucial technique used by anglers to keep stocks healthy.
They also learnt about tagging, which is often done by deep water fishers.
Fisheries officers encouraged them to consider a career with NSW Fisheries.
When it comes to compliance, female officers are less likely to get abused by people who have done the wrong thing.
More than 300 Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal children from the Illawarra and Shoalhaven areas have already participated in the program.
