A resident, Mark Rush, was woken by a loud bang coming from a pedestrian crossing on the corner of Wallabah Way, about 3am.
He said he looked outside and saw a car alight and seemingly stuck on pipe rails in the centre of the crossing.
“I flew out the front door and the car was pretty well alight,” Mr Rush said. “It was jammed in between the two concrete edges. The back wheels were locked around the pipe and the tow bar was sitting on the ground.
“I don't believe it was deliberately put there.”
“All the airbags were going off – exploding – and I dialed triple-0 straight away.”
Mr Rush said his wife heard “high revs” in the lead-up to the bang.
He saw no one in the surrounding area before a Fire and Rescue NSW crew arrived and extinguished the car, a Toyota Carolla.
“They [the car’s occupants] could have been 50 feet away – you wouldn’t have seen them because it was so dark,” he said, adding “the fire brigade did a good job”.
Police have obtained the car’s registration details.
