The farm is a unique and specialised environment available to men experiencing homelessness.
The keynote speaker at the event, former NRL player and professional boxer Joe Williams, delivered a powerful talk about men’s health, and overcoming suicide and depression.
The crowd was impressed with his courage.
He told them, that he has had many fierce opponents on the field and in the ring, but nothing compared to the enemy within.
He encouraged people to speak up about their mental battles, and not to be afraid of the mental health ward.
He said people are often reluctant to address their mental health problems, but it’s just like addressing any health problem, and his life has improved immensely since he sought help.
He also discussed the modern day issues associated with keeping time and stressful deadlines that he believes are behind the rise in anxiety.
The fundraiser was a success with hundreds of community members in attendance to support the farm, run by St Vincent De Paul without any government funding.
They are on the look out for volunteers, so if you can offer even two hours per week, contact the manager on (02) 4423 0640.
