The group from Myola, Callala Beach and Callala Bay have been sewing for five months.
Shoppers gratefully accepted a bag as they entered IGA, impressed with the initiative to reduce the circulation of single-use plastic bags.
“We’re trying to stop every little plastic bag from getting into the ocean,” Rowena Sierant said.
“It’s lifted off, particularly in coastal suburbs.”
Shoalhaven City Council provided a small donation to assist the group.
IGA, the bakery, the bottle shop, and the local gift shop have accepted bags to use in their stores.
The bags are so beautiful, that the initial idea, to borrow one and bring it back didn’t work, so the Callala group has gone with the new logo, to borrow and reuse.
“Take one, reuse it again and again,” Rowena said.
“Make sure you put it in your car, and instead of getting a plastic bag for milk and a loaf of bread, use this.”
