Dr Ryan passed away peacefully at his Nowra home on Tuesday, November 21, aged 87.
Dr Ryan started his medical career in the Shoalhaven in 1956, working with his father Dr Frank Ryan.
Dr Bill treated thousands of local patients and delivered countless babies in a medical career that continued until 2007.
For many years he was the NSW Government medical officer and he was a former president of the World Police Medical Officers Association.
In March this year he celebrated 60 years of marriage to his wife Pat, who was also a local doctor, working in practice with her husband since 1957.
He is survived by his wife Pat, children Denise, Frank, Marianne and Mark, their partners, 18 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
It is the end of a long era, however the Ryan name continues in local medical circles with Dr Mark Ryan working as a cardiologist in Nowra, while three grandchildren are currently studying medicine.
Funeral arrangements for Dr Bill Ryan are yet to be finalised.
