Transmit will showcase the work of 18 performers at the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre.
The talented young people have been guided through the creative process by industry mentors in a series of workshops culminating in the Transmit performances.
A group of young people and students from Bomaderry High, Nowra High, Vincentia High and Ulladulla High have been encouraged to move out of their comfort zones by telling their stories with rap, poetry, contemporary dance and film making.
The result is an empowering show offering an insight into the coming of age as a young Indigenous person in the Shoalhaven.
“The focus of the project is self-expression through a creative and collaborative process,” Bundanon’s Community Engagement Manager, Regina Heilmann said.
“The young people involved have looked to their own lived experience to generate the material.”
Now in its fifth year, the Transmit program brings local youth together with high calibre artists and performers such as Candy Royalle, Bjorn Stewart, Eric Avery and Caleena Sansbury.
The diversity of mentors creates opportunities to try new genres. Participants who fall back on the common rap form were challenged to experiment with a more abstract poetic structure.
“Working closely with the individual artists has given the young people an insight into a unique creative process, based on the artist’s own practice and experience of making work and performing,” Regina said.
“They have responded to creative tasks encouraging them to draw on conversations around culture, what is important to them right now and what it means to transition into adulthood.”
In 2017 the Transmit program has focused on young people with an interest in the arts as a career path.
This makes the offering slightly different to previous years where up to 60 young people have been involved.
The outcome is a palette of short pieces woven together into a 45 minute performance.
Performances will be held at 11am, 1pm and 6pm on December 1 in the Studio theatre of the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre. Entry is free.
