A number of exhibitors presented almost every dairy cattle breed for judging with a growing number of young handlers under 25 taking to the showring.
The Spring Heifer Classic is for handlers 25 years and under and for heifers two years and under.
The day is designed to highlight the current crop of heifers heading into the local show season and to encourage young handlers to get more time in and experience the showring.
Jason Chesworth, from Muswellbrook, who has a long background in showing cattle, was the judge. Jason along with his wife Annie rose to fame on the television program My Kitchen Rules where they were affectionately nicknamed “Mr and Mrs Cheese”.
And in 2017 he had a quality field of heifers to judge.
Junior champion was Stormhill Winters Applejack, shown by Mali Dillon, of Picton ahead of Jim Strong’s Strongbark Solomon Candy shown by Ash Wright.
Senior champion and the overall grand champion was Jim Strong’s Strongbark Larramie Candy shown by Zac Hackett.
Reserve grand champion was Stormhill Winters Applejack, shown by Mali Dillon, of Picton.
Once again a number of local businesses supported the event providing the young exhibitors with a great array of prizes.
One of the event organisers, Col Walsh thanked all the cattle owners for providing animals for the young handlers.
“This event is all about encouraging the next generation of young showers,” he said.
“It is great to have such an event as this to keep this tradition going.
“We must also thank Alex and Jared Cochrane from Raine and Horne Nowra, who again backed the event.
“And a special thanks to Sue Walsh and Gail Menzies who do all the behind the scenes work to make sure this event can be staged.”
