Behind the scenes at the 2017 TAFE Nowra Celebrity Chef Dinner
Those in the know have probably already booked tickets to next year’s annual TAFE Nowra Celebrity Chef Scholarship Degustation Dinner.
The dinner, which has become a staple dish on Nowra’s social calendar, sees a celebrity chef perform with TAFE students of commercial cookery, hospitality and events.
This year’s special guest celebrity chef Justin North is the former owner and executive chef of celebrated Sydney French-fusion eatery, Becasse.
At the dinner, the three TAFE students, Mathew Simpson, Brenden Schutz and Katie Sayer won scholarships of win a week’s work experience with Ben Willis, owner of two-hatted Canberra restaurant, Aubergine and Temporada.
A winery scholarship at Silos Estate was awarded to Hannah Stubbles.
Among the guests was celebrity chef Mark Olive who took part in the TAFE Nowra Industry Showcase leading up to the dinner.
Grow with TAFE was the theme of the night and as former students and scholarship winners shared their experiences it was clear the future of food in the region was in safe hands.
One of the event’s staunchest supporters in the past was celebrity chef Darren Simpson, who tragically passed away in June, aged 48.
During Tuesday night’s dinner one of Mr Simpson’s chef jackets was auctioned.
The winning bidder was Denise Jones at $1500. The money raised from the auction will be donated to Jim Da Silva Farm, a facility for men dealing with drug, alcohol issues or mental illness.
