And all the hard work paid off on Monday, when Nowra Torchbearers’ president Stenia McDonnell presented $13,000 to Nowra Legacy on behalf of her members.
Nowra Legacy chairman Colin Cook and members at Monday’s meeting were “blown away” with the donation.
“This is incredible,” Mr Cook said.
“It is the first time we have actually received the donation direct from Torchbearers Nowra and we are extremely grateful.
“I’m lost for words.”
Mr Cook said the donation would be used for welfare activities within the organisation – supporting junior Legatees, widows and school programs.
Ms McDonnell outlined the big week of activities during Legacy Week in August.
“We had 22 civilian volunteers help us,” she said.
“We also had 29 defence personnel and torchbearer members selling merchandise.
“Four local high schools, Nowra, Bomaderry, Shoalhaven and St John’s also supported our efforts.
“We even enlisted Gilmore MP Ann Sudmalis, who volunteered to do a shift.
“The efforts of everyone was outstanding and we can’t thank all those who sold merchandise and members of the public who purchased items enough.”
She said over the week, 255 volunteer hours were spent selling merchandise, with volunteers selling pins, pens, wrist bands and Legacy bears at locations throughout the Shoalhaven.
Mr Cook said Nowra Legacy had had a long association with Nowra Torchbearers.
“I think our association goes way back to 1977,” he said.
“Nowra Torchbearers are one of only two torchbearing groups in the South Coast Club. They work closely with us and are a hardworking group.
“We can’t thank them enough for their continued support.”
