“Clearly the issue of transport around the Shoalhaven is a big one,” he said.
“It’s restrictive, it causes isolation, it’s an issue needing to address.
“It prevents young people from getting to interviews.
“If you haven’t got a car in the Shoalhaven, you’re stuck.”
In 2000, council developed an integrated transport strategy that was never fully implemented.
Cr Levett would like to revive recommendations from the report.
“If we just simply got a bus running up and down the highway four times a day linking up with Bomaderry railway station, and get people from villages out to the highway, it would be a start to solving the issue of people getting around,” he said.
“It has to be a collaborative effort from all levels of government, I know our State members are happy to help.”
He believes transport companies may take an interest in the concept in some villages, but not others.
“In some areas that are heavily populated, like Huskisson, Vincentia, St Georges Basin a regular bus service could be quite profitable, however in areas like Bendalong and Sussex Inlet, they may have to work up some community arrangement, perhaps using community buses or carpooling,” Cr Levett said.
Cr Levett shared his ideas at a youth unemployment forum in Nowra on Wednesday.
