With the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), parents and carers of children and young people with a disability will have greater choice about the services they use.
With this in mind, the Office of the Children’s Guardian has developed new resources called Safe Space to help parents and carers choose organisations or individuals to work with their child.
Safe Space suggests that parents should:
- Verify that the person has a valid Working With Children Check
- Ask the person for their resume and copies of their qualifications
- Ask the person to provide at least two recent referees, who can give you information about the person’s skills and experiences in working with children and young people
- Ask the person why they think they can meet your child’s specific needs and provide examples of when they have worked with other children and young people with similar care needs
- Employ the person for a trial period so you can observe them working with your child

The Office of the Children’s Guardian is also providing free workshops to help disability service providers understand and implement Child Safe principles into the workplace and ensure greater protection for children by assisting providers to meet their legal obligations.
