The season opener was a Thursday race with three Timpenny’s and a Spiral dinghy competing in the Gate Start Race. The Spiral ended up winning on handicap ahead of Cheeky Chick (Liz and Robyn) in 2nd place, Serendipity (Dick and Crew) 3rd and Fly Navy Too (Greg and Ronda) 4th.
The first weekend race was an inside course, sailed in a fresh and cool Southerly breeze. With some tight tussles, some kites flying and others playing it safe there was good racing all around the course. The fleet split into groups with the larger faster boats putting a bit of a gap to the smaller boats at the back. The Backchat crew were having a good tussle in the chasing pack until Skipper Steve copped a boom to the head in an unplanned gybe causing some anxious moments for the crew. Happy to report no permanent damage sustained to the skipper or vessel. Also well done to Equinox (Ken, Jannette and Les) for their first race, finishing in the middle of the fleet. Two Up (Paul and Lynne) kept chasing the fleet and despite finishing towards the back of the fleet managed a well-deserved win on handicap, just beating one of the front runners Sussex Inlet RSL (Silver, Macca and Marco) into second place.
The second Thursday Race was a Spinnaker series, featuring four Timps and a Spiral again. In a bit of results reversal from the previous week, first place went to Fly Navy Too (Greg and Ronda) followed by the Cheeky Chick (Liz and Robyn), then Two Up, Serendipity and last but not least the Spiral.
The Second weekend race was the first Basin Chase of the season. A creditable 10 yachts took to the start and then a testing work to the first mark saw Sussex Inlet RSL (Silver, Macca and Marco) fighting with Southern Cross (Greg and Lynne) and the rugged up poms on HooRoo (Andy and Lou with non-pom Joel). Then it was shy spinnakers for those that could, up to Palm Beach then a work back to Oakey Lagoon. After that the fleet started to spread a little with spinnakers all the way from Oakey to Sussex then around Kangaroo point all the way to Talyan Point, with Pass The Port (Paul and Lynne) joining the big boats at the front, Gone Too Farr (Greg, Ronda, Chris, Annabelle and crew) settling in the middle and Serendipity (Dick and crew) and Tingaround (Andrew and crew) in the company of Two Up and HooRoo. A relatively painless dip in and out of Ernies and with the wind easing a little some boats even managed a kite run to the finish. Cleary the Roo crew (Andy Louisa and Joel) were used to sailing in such conditions coming home first on handicap.
