Last Saturday saw the start of the new sailing season at Nowra Community Sailing Club with heat one of the Bomaderry Bowling Club point score. Despite an inclement weather forecast, four Spirals, a Laser, a Finn and an M.G. made up a good fleet to face the starter in a light south easterly breeze. Michael Fairbairn won the start from Bill, Wayne, Cameron, Alan, Steve, and Dave and Rob on the M.G.

As the fleet worked to the top mark, Michael in the Finn skilfully picked the shifts in the breeze and opened a lead on the first bunch of Spirals where Bill, Wayne and Steve with Cameron close behind were battling hard for the next few places, with Alan and Dave behind them.
During the second lap Bill opened a slight lead on Wayne with Steve in hot pursuit while Alan moved his Laser ahead of Cameron who in turn was being chased by Dave.
By the final lap Michael opened a considerable lead on Bill who put some distance on Wayne. Steve was pushing Wayne hard with Alan and Dave ahead of Cameron. This was the order for the finish except Cameron managed to retake the place from Dave and Rob.
Handicaps were carried over from last season and this gave Bill a clear win from Michael with Alan just a corrected minute behind Michael. Steve was just nine seconds after Alan and Wayne less than a minute further back. Cameron was two minutes behind Wayne, and like Dave, was obviously trying to boost his handicap for the rest of the season. The win gave Bill the well-deserved Kel Campbell Trophy of the Day.
This Saturday the club races for heat one of the Manildra Championship, heat two of the Bomaderry Bowling Club point score, and the Kel Campbell Trophy of the Day. The start will be 2.15pm.
