To recognise donations to the Rotary Foundation a Paul Harris Fellow pin and medallion (PHF) named after the founder of Rotary is struck for each $1000 donated by a Rotary Club or an individual donor.
Rotary Clubs make annual donations to the Foundation and use the PHF awards to recognise people who have given outstanding humanitarian service to both Rotary and the community at large.
Historically Rotary Nowra have used the PHFs to recognise the leadership work of its past presidents and other Rotarians and partners for their higher “Service above Self” contributions.
It has also awarded PHF’s to non-Rotarians in the community for their extra ordinary humanitarian service.
The many recipients include the late Dr. Ray Cleary who was instrumental in establishing the Shoalhaven Campus of the University of Wollongong, Bomaderry resident, Darren Flanagan, who endangered his own life in the rescue of the trapped Beaconsfield miners, Bruce Bishop for his significant contributions to Rotary including his organising the annual Rotary fundraising Adventure Bus Tours, Tim Francis for his wonderful work with other local organisations and youth in the community to establish and operate the “Taste of Paradise” permaculture and organic farm near Berry, Tim Hudman for his dedicated work in the operation of the Shoalhaven Suicide and Prevention Awareness Network (SSPAN) and more recently Councillor Greg Watson for his long and dedicated service to the Shoalhaven Community.
Every now and then a Rotarian demonstrates a consistent dedication to Rotary over many years and additional PHF’s have periodically been awarded.
The Sapphire Pin is the equivalent of two PHF’s and is the highest award, to date, given by Rotary Nowra to its members.
Its recipients are Rotarians that have continuously been actively involved in Rotary’s many administration and service portfolios. Nine Nowra Rotarians have been awarded Sapphire Pins.
Over recent weeks Rotary District 9710 Governor, Steve Hill, has been making his official annual visits to Shoalhaven Rotary Clubs to update them on any developments and changes in District and Rotary International operations.
During his visit to Rotary Nowra, Rotarian Mick Ludlow was caught off guard when president Polly Hill, on behalf of the board of Rotary Nowra and its members awarded him with a Sapphire Pin for his dedication to Club administration and the public relations promotion of Rotary in the Shoalhaven since his consecutive years as president between 2005 and 2007.
