The truck crash caused extensive damage to a bridge and lead to long delays on the highway on Wednesday morning.

Emergency services were called to the Wingecarribee River Bridge, where they found a prime mover and trailer, carrying frozen goods, well alight shortly after 9am.

The driver, aged in his 60s, was the only person in the truck. He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics for minor injuries and taken to Bowral District Hospital.

Firefighters extinguished the fire, but the truck was destroyed.

A Rural Fire Service spokesperson said the crash happened about 8.30am and eight crews with more than 30 fire fighters attended the scene.

He said the truck fire ignited a nearby area of bushland.

Motorists are urged to allow more time for their trip and avoid the area.

The road was closed for some time on Wednesday, and diversions were put in place. Authorities were able to open the southbound carriageway about 1pm, the Transport Management Centre said.

"One lane is open in each direction in the southbound carriageway and there is a reduced speed limit," a spokeswoman said.

"There has been extensive damage to the bridge, with repairs expected to continue for the rest of the day and overnight."

It's the second truck fire in that area of the highway this week. A truck carrying fibre glass and pool materials caught fire on Monday.
