It’s worth a punt
Every town in Australia has it attractions and holds imaginative events. However, every town in Australia is competing for the same tourist dollar. It is necessary for the Shoalhaven to continue concentrating its efforts on tourism but also to focus on other industries because events are irregular, in many cases weather dependent and don’t provide full-time employment. At best, events are a band aid approach to solving economic challenges.

The proposed motorsports race track at Yerriyong will provide full-time employment and will attract a service industry around its development. Councillors are regularly asked what is being done to create employment opportunities for residents of the Shoalhaven. With the decline of fishing, dairying, forestry, and manufacturing, the Shoalhaven has to find alternative industries that will attract employment and business. Tourism, retirement, aged care, education, health and other service industries are developing the Shoalhaven’s resilience to economic hardship. The more employment options the Shoalhaven provides the greater the chances of success.
The proposed motorsports race track will help to further increase employment opportunities and eventually contribute to the prosperity of the region. The proposed motorsports racetrack infrastructure has the potential to make Nowra a destination giving people another reason to come and stay in the Shoalhaven. It will add to the revitalization of Nowra CBD and will also have positive impacts on surrounding regions as competitors will travel from other regions and from interstate.
The Shoalhaven needs to keep pace with a complex changing world. Two options are clear, diversify or decline. Providing this motorsports facility will offer a year round alternative attraction, in an isolated location, without impacting the overall natural assets of the Shoalhaven.
If the Shoalhaven Council can provide a development application that will attract federal and state funding along with private investment to build this motorsports race track then over the fullness of time, Shoalhaven residents will be the beneficiaries. It seems reasonable to spend the money and take the risk in order to develop this proposed facility here in the Shoalhaven.
Shoalhaven City Council spends millions of dollars on providing sporting facilities to the community. It makes sense to support a sport that has the potential to provide a revenue that could be used to offset the losses made by other sports.

God’s waiting room
I must have dozed off before the Grand Final even started. When I woke up, the surroundings were unfamiliar and I was lying full tilt on a white leather recliner.
Above me the domed ceiling was at least 12 feet in the old money. I got up and looking around, could see that I was in an upmarket waiting room. Armchairs, couches, more recliners all in leather. Tea and coffee facilities.
The view from the tall latticed window was breathtaking. Lush pastureland, rising to a spectacular mountain ridge which descended into a valley to the north.
Straight out of The Castle. The serenity. Celestial, even. Wait a minute! Had I died and gone to heaven? Was this God’s Waiting Room?
Then a flashback- the naked shower with the pretty brunette, a cattle rustler who did a bit of casual nursing on the side.
And another – the svelte blonde who offered “special” spa services. I started to recall….
Just then the Manildra freight train came thundering past and I finally got my bearings.
No, I hadn’t died and gone to heaven: lucky me, I was in Karinya for post -operative care.
