The race drew a fleet of seven yachts, with three of the larger yachts in Division 1 completing a 17-nautical mile course that circumnavigated Jervis Bay, while the four smaller vessels in Division 2 tackled a slightly shorter course of 15 nautical miles. The winds were variable, but mostly from the north-east at 15 knots.
Racing was close in both divisions, with Matana and Fricka fighting a tacking duel through the final leg right up to the finish line. In a tight race for handicap honours Matana, Fricka and Wotalife all finished within five minutes of each other.
The racers were also joined by a pod of frolicking whales, reminding everyone of just what a special cruising ground the Jervis Bay Marine Park is.
Line honours in Division 1 were taken by Alan Leach (Tranquillity) in 2 hours 46 minutes, also winning the division on handicap. Second place, on handicap, went to Brian Horley (Wine Down). Shane Firkin (Quintessence) came in third.
In Division 2 Trevor Smith (Relentless) claimed line honours in 3 hours 19 minutes. After handicapping the results in Division 2 were, 1st Denis Meredith (Wotalife), 2nd Trevor Smith (Relentless) and Third Paul Gooey (Matana).
The Jervis Bay Cruising Yacht Club’s next race is on Sunday, October 22.
