It is the organisation’s second open day and a chance for the public to have a look at the sub-branch’s hall, its superb collection of memorabilia and learn about the organisation.
“The open day is designed to let people know where we are, what we do and what we have,” said president Fred Dawson.
Over the years the sub-branch has been able to collect and been gifted some superb military memorabilia, which is on display in the RSL Hall.
It has more than 500 items, spanning from the Boer War up to and including Afghanistan and all conflicts in between.
“The collection of items spans almost 120 years,” Mr Dawson said.
Among some of the memorabilia is an old Union Jack from the Boer War, the original Waratah March banner, which’s centenary was commemorated in 2015 with a re-enactment and some superb war-time photographs.
Also on display are more recent items, including the six specially designed jerseys which have been worn as part of local Digger Day activities.
“It is a great chance to come and see what we have on display and also talk to members and find out what the RSL is all about,” Mr Dawson said.
The RSL organisation was formed in 1919, with the Nowra sub-branch to celebrate its centenary in July 2019.
The RSL was initially formed to look after veterans and their families, a role it continues today.
The open day will be held in the RSL Hall, at 157 Junction Street, Nowra adjacent to the Shoalhaven Ex-Servicemen’s Club from 10am to 2pm. Morning tea will also be available.
