The last week has seen matches of competitive social bowls and some of the notable matches in triples included a one bowl victory to the combination of Ken Stephens, Bob Dunn and Geoff Lidbetter over Harry Harrop, Barry Dunn and Adam Rigney despite this team scoring nine counters over the final six ends. Another match of note played on Wednesday was Tom Froggatt, David Lambert and Nick Nicholls who with consistent scoring took the match by four shots from Bob Dunn, Lindsay McNamara and Geoff Lidbetter.
Pairs matches of note included Col Good and Tom Froggatt defeating Jim Abbott and David Lambert by one end and one shot. The other match saw Phil Chittick and Lindsay McNamara who with consistent bowling over the second half of the match defeat Nick Nicholls and Ken Chittick by four shots and 11 ends to nine.
Despite the start of daylight saving Berry social matches will continue to be played at 1pm Saturdays and Wednesdays with bookings being taken on 0488 729 229 up to 12 noon.
Callala Bowls
The final of the Mixed Pairs Championship was played on Saturday, October 7, in fine sunny conditions in contrast to the very windy conditions for the Semi Final last week. Terry and Greg McMillan started well against Lyn Byrne and Dennis Beazley leading 8 – 3 on the 6th end. Lyn and Dennis equalled the score on the 9th end, 8 all. By the 15th end, Terry and Greg had a healthy lead of 9 shots. Lyn and Dennis won the next 6 ends adding 13 shots to their score, winning the final 23 – 19. Congratulations to both teams for a great, hard fought game. A large crowd of spectators gathered to support the players over the three hour game, thanks to everyone.
The next tournament is set down for October 28 to celebrate passed members in Memorial Day. Next Saturday, October 14, the men’s bowlers have organised a mixed, mufti social triples. Please remember to put your names on the board by Friday. The ladies are still hanging in there and had a great triples game last Tuesday, October 3. We missed Joy Green as she was in hospital. We all wish her a speedy recovery and hope she is back at bowls soon.

Saturday Super Six 7th October. 8 teams contested the 3 game by 6 ends format. Brendan Hughes & Gary Melleuish were winners on the day with 2 wins and a draw. Turning up with only the entry money seems to have worked for the boys again. Runners up were Peter Johnson & Jim Hibbert with 2 wins + 15 margin.
Sunday 8th October. Mixed 4's Final. Congratulations to Lorraine Foster, Arthur Eagleton, Helen Neilsen and skip Jonn Rudd with a 32 to 14 win over Gail Scott, Richard Grayson, Trish Bailey and skip Dennis Foster.
Rookies Zone Finals, Sunday October 8. Well done to Craig McGale who played at Raymond Terrace and represented Culburra proudly, winning 2 of 3 games in his group only to miss the semi-finals by a margin result going against him. All of us at home were following the day’s play keenly with many text messages flying back and forth from up the coast.
Culburra women
Last Tuesday our Social Ladies enjoyed four games of pairs. Winners on the day were Gail Scott and Helen Neilsen over Narrelle Wetsteyn and Thelma Cooley, Carol Blackshaw and Marilyn O’Day over Ruby Salmon and June Jones, Joy Hanneman and Kim Rudd over Maree Guilfoyle and Marea Challender, and Ruth Joannou and Judy Watson over Carol Turton and Lorraine Epple.
Thursday saw our ladies, along with the men, compete in the Warren Halloran Mixed Triples. The day was warm and sunny, and the games were thoroughly enjoyed by all who took part. The AM winners were Eileen Hunter, Joy Hanneman and Steve Munce, PM winners were Brett Gilligan, Kim Rudd and Jim Hibbert, overall 2nd place went to Marilyn O’Day, Arthur Hanneman and Laurie Turner, and the winners of the trophy were Brendon Hughes, Ken O’Day and Rick Neilsen. Thanks to Arthur Eagleton and Peter Johnson for cooking the barbeque lunch, which was enjoyed by everyone after the game.
Congratulations to the 6 Culburra ladies who were part of the South Coast District side that competed successfully in the Inter District game against Sutherland last week.
This week sees the District Minor Triples being played with Culburra well represented. Good luck to all our teams who are entered – enjoy your games!
Shoalhaven Ex-Servicemen Men
October 8: A week of fine weather has seen the bowlers come out of hibernation. Wednesday saw 2 games of Social Triples and 4 games of Social Pairs. On Saturday, the Grand Final of the Club Minor Single was decided as well as two games of Mixed Social Triples and two of Mixed Pairs.
Wednesday 4th October a hot, clear day with no breeze. The green was playing at a fast pace. Rink 2 Norm Schulz, Bert Madge and Graham Mills revelled in the perfect conditions to decimate their opposition by 32 to 19 shots. Rink 3 In a very close game, Roy Cartledge and Trevor Wright played gutsy bowls to come from behind and win by 17 shots to 14. Rink 4 Garry Thurston and Peter Smith used all of their finesse and experience to annihilate their opponents by 28 to 12 shots. Rink 5 saw Les Stuart and Gary Tearle play superb bowls to demolish their opposition by 28 shots to 18. Rink 6 held a hard fought game of pairs with Tommy Smith and Alessandro Lattanzio triumphing over their opponents by just 27 shots to 23. Rink 7 Matthew Rosina, Gary Way and Harry Pearce lead all the way in a strong win by 22 to 17 shots.

Saturday 7th October was a hot day with a zephyr making playing conditions ideal. The greens were running at a fast pace. Rink 2 The Grand Final match of the Club Minor Singles saw Ray Solway master all his considerable skill to overcome a steady Tim McCormack and win by 31 shots to 22. Our thanks go to the Marker, the Club President, Eddy Lee. All hail our new Club Minor Singles Champion, Ray Solway. Rink 4 Gary Way and Peter Smith played fantastic bowls to overcome their opponents by 23 to 16 shots. Rink 5 In a surprising result of Mixed Social Pairs, David Solomon and Graham Mills rolled excellent bowls to devastate their opposition by 27 shots to 13. Rink 6 witnessed another great game of Mixed Social Triples where Pat Leach, John O’Dell and Ian Abberley played exquisite bowls to overcome their opponents by 21 to 15 shots. Rink 7 Matthew Rosina, Steve Hollington and John Edwards played at their devastating best to withstand a fast finishing opposition by 26 shots to 20.

South Coast
On Friday 6th October,2017 the Sutherland Shield was played at Sylvania Bowing Club. Our District travelled up to compete. It was a great day with perfect conditions. There were eight teams of four players from each district and two teams of four from each district of under 5 years, as well as executives.
All the players on both sides played well with the South Coast District winners on the day with 190 to 173 giving the South Coast District a Margin of 17, winning the Sutherland Shield for 2017.
The highest margin winners from the South Coast were Chris Brown, Rose Stuart, Sandra Crimmins, Lyn Handel well done ladies. Chair of Selection Nancye Carre and her ladies did a tremendous job, Head of match Robyn Herbert did a great job with the cards,Helen Neilsen and Ann Raphael kept us updated with doing the master score board,thank you ladies. The Anderson Irvine Shield will be at home at Milton Ulladulla 3rd of November, 2017.

Club Championships. Club Triples Final played 10.30 Saturday 7th October. Final was between the teams of P Flanagan-B Almond - G Clarke versus M Mitchell-T Flinn-S Ellery. Result S Ellery’s team beat G Clarke’s team 23/19 to become club triples champions for 2017. Club Major /Minor Round 1 game played on Wednesday 4th October R O’Grady-M Kiss beat I Woodgate-B Rosen 21/17. Games held on Saturday 7th October M Mitchell-B Brown beat D Draper-B Hollands 21/17.
