Council’s general manager Russ Pigg warned that doing nothing would lead to the failure of the current filtration system and closure of indoor pools for at least three months.
On Tuesday night, councillors voted unanimously to keep the facility open and replace the filtration system.
On average, 260,000 patrons use the leisure centre each year.
Shoalhaven Councillor John Wells pointed out the lifespan of the filtration system had not been particularly long.
“Had we have chosen a better brand at the time, we wouldn't be in this position,” he said.
“We weren't too interested in quality.
“This points out the need to get things right the first time around.”
Four filters on the 25m pool, two on the therapy pool and one on the spa will be replaced.
The filters were installed when the leisure centre opened in 1996.
In contrast, the filtration system at the outdoor pool in Bomaderry has been operating since 1973.
Cr Wells warned his colleagues the pool filter at Bay and Basin Leisure Centre may also be on its last legs.
“They had the same type of filter installed there,” he said.
