He said rainwater tanks were a must have when it came to having a healthy garden.

“The best thing you could do is to buy the biggest tank you could afford,” he said.

He said a decent tank does not take much to fill, when you get a reasonable downpour, and then you have more water to use on your garden when it's dry -  like it’s now .

“It’s going to rain some day and people say ‘it will never rain again’ well that is rubbish and it will rain and if you can catch it then you are better off,” he said.

Mr Moore said one storm at the Clifton Community Food Garden in Sanctuary Point filled up four tanks.

He said mulching was another good way to help your garden and suggests sugar cane mulch as the best to use.

“It (sugar cane mulch) is not as cheap as some but it’s a lot easier to use and breaks down and becomes part of the soil in the end and makes the soil better,” he said.

“Other than that you can use straw or lucerne mulch which is not cheap either but any of those sorts of things are good.

“Even grass clippings, if you compost them, because green grass, if you put it on your garden, will take the nitrogen out of the soil.”

He said the grass kills the weeds when it breaks down.

Mr Moore said people should also only water their garden during certain times of the day.

Morning and afternoon are the times he suggests.

“Water them (your plants) only when then need watering - you don’t have to water every day,” he said.

“As long as you keep the soil moist, especially with young seedlings, because if you let them dry out they will die.”

He said if you over water then you are wasting a precious resource.

If people were looking for something to plant in their vegetable patches now he would recommend tomatoes, corn and potatoes which he said were all easy to grow.

“They also produce more than one item from that plant so that is why they are good,” he said.

“You put one tomato plant in and you might get two dozen tomatoes off that bush.”
