Now in its 10th year, the Leukaemia Foundation’s Light the Night fundraiser brings Australia’s blood cancer community together in more than 140 locations, in every state and territory, to remember and reflect during a moving ceremony and short lantern walk.
The Shoalhaven event will be held on Friday, October 6 at Apex Park in Berry.
Those attending the Berry Light the Night events will gather for a small ceremony before setting off on a picturesque lantern walk.
Berry resident Lynn Evans is helping organise Berry Light the Night for the second year in a row.
She’s hoping $1000 will be raised for the Leukaemia Foundation.
“I read a report the other day that stated that one in three people are affected by cancer which is a huge part of our community,” she said.
“It’s nice to be able to be involved in an event that can make a change to sufferers and their families, being able to raise money to offer support, research and give suffers more time and hopefully one day find a cure.”
There will be a barbecue and plenty of entertainment on the night.
Lanterns will be available for purchase on the day. Blue lanterns signify the carrier is supporting other people with cancer, gold is for those to light in memory of a lost loved one and white is for those going through their own cancer journey.
“It was emotional last year but it’s lovely to be able to be a part of something that can make a change,” Lynn said.
“Last years Light the Night was an intimate but beautiful event. It’s very emotional, and it allows everyone to be involved and participate by joining the walk with a lantern.”
Thousands of Light the Night fundraising walks will be held across Australia.
Leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma are all types of blood cancer and they can develop in anyone, of any age, at any time. Thirty-five Australians are diagnosed every single day.
Each year the Leukaemia Foundation aims to raise $2 million during Light the Night 2016 to ensure more people survive blood cancer and go on to live a better quality of life.
