When the story broke a week ago, it was shared widely on social media.
But rather than waving the checkered flag, Shoalhaven Councillor Kaye Gartner said Greens councillors will apply the handbrake on the idea at the council meeting on Tuesday.
“No we won’t support the recommendation,” Cr Gartner said.
“We don't believe it’s a good project, if Motorcycle NSW dropped it after spending a million dollars on it, then why would the council pick it up?
“Are we going to waste a whole lot of council time, staff time and money on this?”
To ensure plans meet state government requirements, the proponent will be required to conduct another biodiversity study, costing upwards of $100,000.
Cr Gartner doubts the track will generate employment figures estimated on the brief.
“Where are these figures coming from?” she said.
“And are any of the jobs going to be for women? Where’s the gender equality there?”
She also raised concerns about the town’s capacity to cope with medical emergencies that are likely to arise on the track.
“Motor racing has the highest incidence of injury of any sport,” she said.
“Think of the impact on Shoalhaven Hospital, the emergency unit there is already overrun.”
