Living Care hosted its first ‘Repair Cafe’ at Clelland Lodge on Wednesday, September 20, to help people with small repairs.
Some of the skills on offer at the first cafe were how to make small eyeglass repairs, how to change a tap washer, make simple sewing repairs, and how to clean your jewellery properly.
Clelland Lodge residents Keith Witenden and Ivan Hunt were on hand to show people how to sharpen their knives.
The Repair Cafe will run on the third Wednesday of every month, from 10am to 12pm and organiser Toni Wallwork said she’s hoping it brings the community together for a cause.
“The Repair Cafe concept does two things, community engagement and sustainability,” she said.
“There’s over 100 cafes worldwide, but what's so different about ours is it’s actually running out of an aged care home.
“What I’m hoping to achieve is to teach people how to make simple repairs, not throw away things and for people to engage with the people that inhabit Clelland Lodge and see how vibrant they are, and see what they do with their knowledge and how they can share that with others.”
The Repair Cafe concept was introduced in the Netherlands by Martine Postma in 2009.
