This hasn’t been one of those quick slap-on-a-new-paint-job situations. The Roxy is a heritage listed building and required a lot of work behind-the-scenes to preserve it for the future.
Roxy owner Bob Brainwood, who painted the cinema himself 27 years ago, has always been passionate about the old art deco building and has passed that passion on to general manager Mel Rose, who has overseen the renovation.
“I started planning the colours for this eight years ago,” Ms Rose said.
“It’s not just new paint, we’ve also got a new Roxy Cinema sign to go up, new lighting, new doors, we put in new windows and there has been a lot of maintenance done along the way,” she said.
There has been plenty of attention to detail including having the brass door handles polished back to their original state.
The cinema is still open and has remained open throughout the renovation. It’s expected there will be about another six weeks before the front of the building is complete. After that the spotlight will be turned to the inside for a revamp of cinema one and the foyer. Movies will continue to be shown throughout this time.
