Culburra Women
A windy week, but lots of bowls for our ladies! Marilyn O’Day, Robyn Herbert , Helen Neilsen and Gail Kiggins (GP) competed in the Sussex Inlet Spring Carnival last week. The tournament was held over 2 days, and we are proud to say that our Culburra team won all four of their games and were the overall winners – congratulations ladies.
Jenny Castellan and Carol Blackshaw travelled to Sydney to compete in the Champion of Champion Major Minor pairs. The completion was tough, and well done to Jenny and Carol on winning their first two rounds – a great achievement in a very competitive field.
Our annual Norm Chant Day and President v Secretaries Day were held last week. It was a great honour to have Mrs Anne Chant join us for the day. Team Ruth Tinsley, Ruth Joannou, Trish Bailey and Anne McCauley had a clean sweep, winning both the Norm Chant trophy and were the winning Secretaries side. Team Dawn Neville, Annette Barry, Carol Turton and Thelma Cooley were runners up.
After the presentation of the trophy and medals by Anne Chant, we all enjoyed a lovely lunch together, and look forward this event again next year.
Good luck to all in the upcoming Club Mixed 4’s Championship and the District Minor Pairs.
Shoalhaven Ex-Servicemen Men
It was a mixed week for bowls with the wind whistling around our ears on Wednesday and the peace of a lovely spring day on Saturday. Wednesday witnessed the last Semi-final of the 2017 Club Major/Minor Pairs Championship with one game of Social Triples and three of Pairs. Saturday saw three games of Mixed Social Pairs and three of Mixed Social Triples.
Wednesday 6th September a chilly, gusty wind in the afternoon made accurate bowling difficult. The green was playing fast.
Rink 2 Unfortunately, in the Semi-final of the Club Major/Minor Pairs, one side handled the windy conditions superbly while the other just could not come to terms with the blustery conditions. Ian Abberley and Harry Pearce played superbly to defeat their opponents by 27 shots to 5.
Rink 4 Matthew Rosina, Steve Hollington and John O’Dell handled the conditions well to come home strongly over their opposition by 25 to 17 shots.
Rink 5 In a very close game, Les Stuart and Eddy Lee played gutsy bowls to come from behind and win by 28 shots to 25.
Rink 6 Gary Way and Ray Solway played splendid bowls to outsmart their opposition by 24 to 14 shots.
Rink 7 In another run away win, Norm Schulz and Roy Cartledge played outstanding bowls to decimate their opponents by 17 shots to 8.
Draw Results: 1st Prize Rink 6 Gary Way and Ray Solway. 2nd Prize Rink 7 Norm Schulz and Roy Cartledge. 3rd Prize Rink 4 Matthew Rosina, Steve Hollington and John O’Dell. 1st Spin Rink 7 Norm Schulz and Roy Cartledge NOT won. 2nd Spin Rink 7 Norm Schulz and Roy Cartledge NOT won.
Saturday 9th September was a warm, sunny afternoon as an Easterly zephyr made conditions perfect for bowling. A fast green was a pleasure to bowl on.
Rink 1 saw Matthew Rosina, Steve Hollington and Sigi Ferchow roll quite a few pin point accurate bowls to subdue their opposition by 21 shots to 17.
Rink 2 A great start by John O’Dell, Liz Steeden and Ray Solway result in them storming home to win by 19 to 13 shots.
Rink 3 In the close game, after some outstanding bowling by both teams, Norm Schulz, Deion Thurston and Alessandro Lattanzio won by 19 to 14 shots.
Rink 4 In the game of the day, Kerrie Way and Peter Smith burst out of the gates with a scintillating six shot end followed by one shot win on the next two ends to give them a wonderful 8 shot lead by just the third end. Garry Thurston and Tim McCormack recovered their wits enough to stem the tide for a couple of ends but Kerrie and Peter were unstoppable. By the 10th end they were in front 17 shots to 4 and by the 15th 20 to 9.
It was time for two of our club champions to get their game together. Garry and Tim struck like a thunderbolt and won the next 4 ends with a couple of fantastic fives to storm to the lead by 23 to 20 shots on the 19th end. Kerrie and Peter shook off this onslaught and dug deeply to win the penultimate end by a shot to be only two shots behind.
Who would hold their nerve and take the game? No one, Kerrie and Peter won the 21st end by 2 shots to tie the game at 23 all. The whole afternoon had come down to this. Would the champs triumph or the opposition outsmart them?
The champs, Garry Thurston and Tim McCormack triumphed by 1 shot to take the game by 24 shots to 23. What a comeback!
Rink 5 Neil Miller and John Edwards showed touches of brilliance in their marvellous win by 24 to 21 shots.
Rink 6 In the final game of the day, Alex Leach and Mick Edwards had to play at their very best to win by 22 shots to 18.
Draw Results: 1st Prize Rink 1 Matthew Rosina, Steve Hollington and Sigi Ferchow. 2nd Prize Rink 2 John O’Dell, Liz Steeden and Ray Solway. 3rd Prize Rink 5 Neil Miller and John Edwards. Players Draw Winner Gary Way.

CHAMPIONSHIPS. In the second semi-final of the minor singles played Friday, greenkeeper Tom Wilson had a comfortable 31/17 win over Darcy Nelson.
The final on Saturday between Tom & Col Milligan was an interesting contest. After 17 ends the score was 14/13 Tom's way & it was anyone's game.
However Tom then kept Col on that score for the next three ends thence on 14 for six more. Disaster for Col it seemed but 26/14 down after 24 ends he dug deep, proving that he is a "fighter".
It took Tom another nine ends to gather the five shots to take the match, final score 31/21. Well done.
The semi-finals of the club triples championship saw the Glen Dickson, Tony Hutchins, Ian Pirie team 23/23 on the 21st end against Paul Barnes, Kerry Jones OBE & Mike Keegan. The extra end went the Dickson team’s way, final score 25/23.
The other semi gave a clear cut win 29/17 win to Dave Munt, Sid Brand & Tom Wilson against Jack Field, Bob Coles & Ted Fraser.
SOCIAL: Wednesday triples $90 mini jackpot was won by Craig Lees, Darcy Nelson & Harry Williams with 9 points. They generously shared with Dave White, Barry B & Dave Beavis.
Lucky rink went to Brian Thurecht & John Bisset. Welcomed back on the greens were Dave Clark & Kev Ross. Friday welcomed Dave Williams & Bruce Malone from Manly BC. The $200 went to Bill Easter & Col Milligan with a score of 13; they played against the Manly men, all happy.
