A week where The Block should have been celebrating its first baby has been overshadowed by contestants Sarah and Jason being threatened with expulsion from the show.
With Sticks flying home in a specially chartered helicopter to Sussex Inlet to his wife Terri for the birth of their for their second child, leaving his mate Wombat to fly solo, it was the lack of work ethic by Sarah and Jason who failed to present their master suite that created headlines.
In a first for the show, the married pair forfeited their room reveal this week, received an overall score of 0 from the judges and were threatened with expulsion from the show.
After their “offensive” lack of work ethic Sarah and Jason have been given one week to prove themselves or they will be booted off the reality show.
They were slammed by the judges and host Scotty Cam on Sunday night’s episode for taking their privileged position on the television show for granted.
“Ten thousand couples applied to be on this series of The Block and have the opportunity you have right now,” Cam told them, in a terse exchange at the end of the show.
After surveying their master suite bedroom space, which was not so much unfinished as relatively unstarted, judge Darren Palmer said: “It’s a slap in the face, really. They’ve been given a golden opportunity, a life-changing opportunity … to get that opportunity and curl it up in a ball and throw it over your shoulder, it’s an insult.”
“They’ve blown it,” said judge Neale Whitaker. “People try so hard to get on this show, that this is just pathetic.”
Although Jason appeared to take offence at the suggestion he and his wife had given up during the week’s work, a clearly annoyed Cam told him: “Actually, I am a bit offended, mate”.
“You said many times your motto is ‘never give up’ and you gave up this week and the judges were not happy about it,” Cam said.
After receiving three zeros from the judges – the first time a couple on The Block has ever received an overall score of 0 – Jason and Sarah were told they must complete their master suite bedroom plus the room required for the next reveal, in full, or they would be removed from the show.
It was a wake-up call for the 40-something pair and it left the other contestants musing whether they should continue.
“Why don’t we just kick them off the show and get another contestant to finish the house,” said Ronnie.
While the judges and host of the show were incredulous about the lack of work in Jason and Sarah’s room, there were incredible efforts by the other teams to finish the ultra-large master bedroom spaces.
Soldiering on without Sticks, Wombat finished the room for reveal.
Sticks didn't even manage to get back for the judging announcement, instead appearing on a live facetime from home while waiting for the new bub to arrive.
At judging he lived up to his nickname, Sticks’ face was plastered on an iPad on a stand and a hoverboard.
Cam even joked the likeable chippy was now “nothing but a stick”.
And he played a good trick on his fellow contestants saying he had “someone to show them, I’ll just go get her”.
Everyone thinking they had had a new baby girl were left disappointed when Sticks returned with his beloved dog.
Somewhat ironically, Jason and Sarah used some of their spare time to help him out towards the end of the week, while still ignoring their own incomplete space.
While the judges liked the feel of Wombat’s completed bedroom, they felt it was let down by the styling.
They were stunned by the walk-in wardrobe though, with Whitaker describing Wombat and Sticks as “frustrating” because “they do little bits of rooms really well”.
Hannah and Clint created a space with a feminine feel which Shaynna Blaze described as “a very pretty room”.
But Palmer felt the couple’s romantic wallpaper did not mix with their dramatic chandelier.
Speaking of drama, Ronnie and Georgie decided to add a little “theatre” to their master suite by adding an entrance hallway to their space.
Their room was loved by all three judges, apart from the artwork which left Neale Whitaker underwhelmed.
“I don’t really like the artwork – the subject needs a good feed. Too bony,” said Whitaker.
It was the final reveal for Josh and Elyse which left the strongest impression on the judges, giving the 24-year-old and 28-year-old the winning score for the night (by half a point) over Ronnie and Georgia.
Despite the lack of a main door, the bedroom with a soft-lounge area left the judges stunned, while Darren Palmer raved about the bathroom’s “va va voom”.
In words that should be heard loud and clear by Sarah and Jason, Elyse summed up this week’s victory simply. “Hard work pays off”.
The final scores for master bedroom suite week were Josh and Elyse on 28.5, Ronnie and Georgia on 28, Hannah and Clint on 25, Wombat and Sticks on 24 and Sarah and Jason on zero.
